The origin of his name

Several theories have been proposed about the origin of the name Vinchiaturo. (Masciotta, Gasdia, Baldini). Some have maintained that the name may derive from the Latin adjective "Vinculum, from the word -vincolane meaning to bind or to tie".
According to one hypothesis, the Romans may have erected a tower on the ancient ruins of the city of Ruffiro, which was used as the premises for political prisoners (vincula catenis) placed under horse arrest.

It is also said that Vinchiaturo may derive from the Latin word "Vinculun" and "tauri" from the ancient oath known as "del tovo" made between confederate people.
In an ancient legal document from 1736 edited by a certain Domenico Spensieri, the name goes back to a place which, still today, can be located in the bell tower where there was a prison with a tower three doors and a drawbridge.
It is thought that the coat of arms with towers and chains come from the witty imagination of Baron Federico Longo in 1550, who was then head of the feud of Vinchiaturo in the period of the Spanish Vice Kingdoms.
